Inspired by the recent proposition from Mountain Valley Express ‘MVX’, Our aim through this blog is to show the viability of creating a high-speed rail from the Fraser Valley through Vancouver to Whistler, BC. We have created two sets of maps that examine two potential routes based on gradient, water features, transportation routes, at risk species, provincial parks, sensitive watersheds, existing infrastructure, environmental factors, as well as population density, and accessibility.
About the Route
The first potential route spans from Chilliwack through the Sea to Sky corridor to Whistler straddling existing highways and train routes. The second route follows the same path from Chilliwack but differs in that it follows Dollarton Highway on the North Shore, to Indian River Road alongside Indian Arm to Iron Bay, then along existing logging routes to Squamish. Then, like the first route, route two would follow along the existing train and Highway 99 to Whistler.
We will examine the benefits and limitations associated with the creation of a high-speed rail as well as the impacts that a high-speed rail will have on local populations, the indigenous nations the rail crosses, and the environment.
